Fall 2010

Menominee County LCD would like to thank residents and property owners who are in compliance with the recycling ordinance. Look for the billboard that is coming soon to Highway 55, where Menominee County/Reservation will proudly advertise the compliance rate, as we strive for 100% compliance! Please be reminded that ALL residents, both County and Tribal, including commercial property owners, as well as municipalities; are obligated to single stream recycling by ordinance. Menominee County is fortunate in receiving grant dollars to facilitate garbage pick up. If people do not participate in the program, grant dollars will be lost, causing tax increases for everybody. It is imperative that we all conform to recycling, advancing toward environmental correctness and make lifestyle changes in respect to the environment. As each individual does their share, together as a community we can proudly progress toward a clean and sustainable environment. The Land Conservation Department will have rolls of clear plastic bags available to residents FREE of charge for co-mingled recyclables. Please stop by W3270 Courthouse Lane to receive a complimentary roll of clear bags while supplies last.

LCD would also like mention the gypsy moth cycle as it will progress with summer months. Populations of caterpillars were very high this year due to inflated egg mass numbers and a very warm and dry spring, causing tree defoliation and grief for residents. Approximately 226 acres received spray treatment this year. We predict populations declining next year, as there was a high mortality rate observed once we received occasional rains. LCD will be conducting egg mass counts in August. A team will invest great effort with strong intentions to qualify as many areas as possible for spray treatment next year. We ask residents to refrain from removing egg masses independently until AFTER August, as removing egg masses before may alter the data LCD collects and limit the qualification process. Once we are in the month of September, remove egg masses and burn in your fire pit or submerge the collection in a bucket of vegetable oil overnight to suffocate the eggs; simply knocking them down is NOT effective as hatch may still occur. If you have questions about the gypsy moth there is literature available at the LCD or you may visit website: http://gypsymoth.wi.gov

In closing, I would also like to mention concerns on aquatic invasive species (AIS) present in numerous lakes in our area. The county and Tribe have taken a partnered approach to apply for grant dollars that will facilitate a prevention and control program. Several entities will take the lead when implementing management efforts and invites the community to be involved with control procedures. A workshop will soon be scheduled and all interested parties are welcome to participate! Look for updates on Tribal and LLPOA websites: www.legendlake.info and www.menominee-nsn.gov . Have a happy and safe summer!
